How the Gym Changed My Life – A Kenyan Youth’s Fitness Journey
Growing up in Kenya, I never imagined that one day the gym would become such a big part of my life. Like many youths around me, I was more into football, hanging out with friends, or vibing to the latest gengetone hits. But all that changed the day I walked into a gym—and never looked back.
At first, it was intimidating. Big machines, serious faces, and people who looked like they had it all figured out. But something inside told me to keep going. I started small—just 20 minutes on the treadmill, a few light weights, and a lot of water breaks. But I was showing up. That’s what mattered.
Within a few weeks, I started feeling different. I had more energy, I was sleeping better, and my self-confidence started to rise. For the first time, I wasn’t just working out—I was working on myself.
Being a youth in Kenya comes with its own pressures—school, hustle, peer expectations, and even the silent battles we fight mentally. But the gym became my escape. A place where I could silence the noise, challenge myself, and become stronger—not just physically, but mentally too.
Fitness taught me discipline. It taught me consistency. And most importantly, it taught me that results don’t come overnight—but they do come.
Now, hitting the gym isn’t just a routine, it’s part of my lifestyle. I’ve made friends there, encouraged others to start their journey, and even inspired a few who thought "working out is not for me."
If you’re reading this and thinking about starting, let me be real with you—it won’t be easy at first. But the day you start is the day you take control. Whether it’s lifting weights, doing push-ups at home, or running around your estate—just start.
To all my fellow Kenyan youths out there: don’t just chase the bag, chase your health too. Your body is the one place you have to live for the rest of your life. Take care of it.
